Ch-ch-changes!

2 min read
Dear God it's been a long time dA.  I apologize for ignoring you these past few months but life's been sorta busy.  So last I posted here I was all snuggled in to my life down in Houston working my tail off when a friend of mine convinced me to change jobs.  Now this job was in an area I really longed to work in and I wasn't all that happy with my current one so I said, let's do this!

Unfortunately, this job was all the way up in Minnesota.  In the middle of February.  Undaunted, I drove (20 hr drive if you're wondering) from Houston to Minneapolis and moved all my stuff up here.  It nearly snowed like two freakin' feet when I arrived here.  How's that for a welcome?

There were other major changes in my life which I'd rather talk about here, but suffice to say, they were big time MAJOR changes.  So it took me awhile but I've finally settled down.  I kinda like it up here but so far it's been summer weather and the fall is beginning to set in so I'll have to see how I hold up on Minnesota winters.

I do have to say the people are too freakin' nice.  ;)

Ya know sometimes I feel like I live in two worlds.  By day I'm an engineer and by night (err, sometimes during the day too) I write.  Not so much lately with the writing unfortunately but I plan to rectify that soon.

Anyway, bearing in mind my profession I noticed that I take a wholely analytical view on writing as well as art.  When I see something I like either written or drawn I break it down and figure out what it is I like about it.

It's something I know many true artist would detest nor understand.  When I've met people who produce truly magnificent works of art I usually ask them how?  Most of the time they just tell me it just kinda flowed or it felt right or that's how it was suppose to look.  For an engineer like me, who lives and dies by very well defined step of rules on how things are done, it's very frustrating.

Then again that's probably the alure of art.  It's something I don't understand and probably never will but that's fine with me.  I still enjoy all of the work you guys on dA do.

Happy New Year!

My Dream

2 min read
It took me some time to finally realize it but I believe my one dream in life (outside of the usual earn lots of money and become Master of the Universe) is to produce a graphic novel.  Unfortunately, the lack of actual drawing talent has thwarted that.  However for what I lack in drawing talent I think I more than make for in writing talent.

I've approached a few artists in my lifetime and did a few small side projects, really nothing more than an experiment on my part to see what was involved.  I was totally surprised by how much easier it was to produce a script as opposed to writing a narrative.  The hard part was selecting an interesting concept and mapping the plot.

Correction, the hardest part is convincing an artist to commit to such a project.  Not that I'm complaining (mostly).  You have to have chemistry or else the whole thing doesn't work.  Either the writer loses motivation or the artist.  The concept itself needs to be an organic creative process between the artist and the writer or else it'll never get past the 'gee wouldn't this make for an epic cool comic one day' stage.

Anyway, like I said earlier I'd be tingled flesh tone (not pink cause like that would be totally ghey) if I'd be a part of a creative team that produces a graphic novel, pro, amateur, or hobby.  I think it would be hell of a lot of fun.

Okay, that's enough rambling.  Story update tiems.  Here's something different.  This is a Fullmetal Alchemist story featuring an odd pairing from the first anime 'season' I guess.  It was inspired (re: 'borrowed') from another story by a fanfic writer by the name of Ryoko Blue.  She did such a great job of setting up this pairing I couldn't resist adding my own little flair to it.

Until next time.

I think I learned a few valuable lessons recently here on dA.  I've posted several chapters of my stories up here on dA hoping to gain a new audience and hopefully garner some fans.  So far it seems the Sovereign of the Spirit story is doing better than Terrible Things to Waste in terms of views and favorites.

Not that it totally surprises me.  Terrible is a little more difficult to get into for a fanfic story since you have to forgive the fact the core of the story revolves around a group of new original characters and I'm committing the ultimate Sailor Moon Fanfic Cardinal Sin for using the dub names.  But I figured in for a penny, in for a pound and besides I think the story is pretty strong on its own.  Now if I can just get people to read it.  ^^;  Sovereign is a straight up typical Sailor Moon fanfic which I enjoy writing but I consider Terrible more of my baby.  A baby I hope to finish before my children reach college.

Anyway, I also learned people like pretty pictures than they do pretty words.  Again not so surprising since dA's bread and butter is pictures.  To be honest I don't usually think of dA as a big fanfic hub either.  It was kinda flattering to see people favoriting several of the Big Bend National Park pictures though I have no idea how half of them even found the pictures in the first place.  Too bad I suck at drawing and make a better writer (barely).

As you can see on the left side, there is a new chapter of Terrible posted up.  I think for the next update I'll take an informal survey.  What should I post next?

-Sovereign of the Spirit
-Terrible Things to Waste
-Fullmetal Alchemist oneshot
-Inuyasha oneshot
-Sailor Moon oneshot

Chose wisely.

Sorry it's been awhile between updates.  This is what happens when my life decides to park on my free time and force me to take care of bidness.  The good thing that came out of the down time is that I was able to write an article for a technical magazine which is awesome.  I'd share but the contents of it are rather dry.  Plus if I was to share I'd be giving away my secret identity and we all know once someone finds out a hero's secret identity they either a) die or b) become my sidekick.  Both of those options are worse than death.  DEATH I tell you!

Okay, what was I saying?  Oh yeah, so here's another chapter of Sovereign of the Spirit.  I think next week I'll post up another chapter of Terrible Things to Waste and following that with an Inuyasha oneshot I wrote up.

Until then folks, ta ta!
